Living Triumphantly In Trying Times

Triumphant+Living+

We all want to live in triumph. (Triunfo) No one likes to suffer defeat but at sometime or other we all live through difficult times. Some people are suffering more than others during this pandemic of Corona Virus. Those who are older, those with other health problems they tell us are at a greater risk. Then there are those who cannot work. The businesses and factories are closed. Many are suffering financial hardships. All of these trials are difficult. Some have lost loved ones or friends. So we can either live in misery, depression, fear and hopelessness or perhaps there is another option. Today in our Bible Study we look at James 1:17, a great verse. I remember memorizing this verse many years ago. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” Let us pin point some obvious truths and helpful truths from this verse today.

1. The gifts to the blessed. Some years ago I studied and taught this chapter and decided that the theme of it was “the blessed man”. We have already seen earlier in this chapter that many times before the blessings there may be burdens and we must bear up under these trials until they can be turned by God into a blessing. Let us think about how God wants to bless us. Our text says “every good gift, every perfect gift comes from God. We need to be sure we are looking in the right place for our gift, our blessing. Look at Psalm 121. What great truth! Friend do you need something? You need this gift, this blessing? Where are you looking? Your bank account? Your job? Your friends? The government?

2. The Giver to those blessed. That brings us to the next thought. “Cometh down from above” Again, where are you looking for your help? Today SO many are watching TV, the news, the government representatives, the medical professionals – looking to them for HELP. May I remind you “the good things” the perfect things come from God. Col 3:1-2. The One who spoke and the sun, moon and stars came into being is the One we can trust. The Father of lights. Gen 1:14. “With whom is no variableness…” Mal 3:6; 1 John 1:5. As we have watched the news, the professionals, their predictions, their models have changed continually. Everyday it is something new. Something different. Something more to fear.

3. The grace in that blessing. James 1:18. What we receive no matter what is a gift from the Giver. But the greatest of these is that the Giver has given us life. Given us family. See the word, “begat” or birthed us. He is our Father. He gives us life. He makes us His own – before all the rest of creation. That is the greatest gift that any of us could receive. And He does it with the word of truth. 1 Pet 1:23; He regenerates sinners through the power of that word (cf. 2 Cor. 6:7; Col. 1:5; 1 Thess. 2:13; Titus 3:5; 1 Pet. 1:23–25; Rom 10:17
What a gift. If you received nothing else. That is enough. Do you have that gift given by grace. Do you belong to the Father, part of His family. Look to him. No one, nothing else can help you. Look to Christ!
