Path to Death

We continue our study in the book of James chapter one. Now we are looking at verses 13-16. Which speaks of the slippery path of sin that ultimately leads to death. Last time we looked at how trials and tests of life that are normal in our lives must be faced with joy, wisdom, patience and faith without doubting. God is no respecter of persons. These trials come to the rich and the poor alike. But when we endure these testings which are to mature us and grow us we can receive the crown of life. We continue along the thought of trials, but as we move from verse 12 to verse 13 the trials are not something that come from God, but come from within ourselves.

A DARK PATH.  Look in verse 13: “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:”  The word “tempted” means to test or prove that brings us to evil. It is different from verse 2 or 12. The earlier trials we spoke about come from God, but there is another kind of trial – this one comes from our own “lust” we have inside. The origin of EVIL comes from our own hearts. How do we know this? Hab 1:3; Lev 19:2. God is Holy. Isa 6:3 and He tempts no one. This evil comes from within (it is our birth sin). But God does make a way for us to escape. 1 Cor 10:13 So do not sink under the pressure of evil.

A DANGEROUS PATH (Verse 14) “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.” We are told about the beginning steps of temptation. It speaks of being “drawn” away. Pulled or lured like a fish toward the bait. 2 Pet 2:14; 18. This is “his own desire”. A strong desire to enjoy more for his flesh – something to satisfy the flesh. Rom 7:8; Mat 15:18-20

A DEADLY PATH  (Verse 15) “Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”  The end of this path of sinful temptation ends with “DEATH”. Sin is a process. Progression. Like the process of birthing. Conception. Pregnancy. Birth.  So see where you are. Stop early. Stop before you go along this path. Think about this ‘DEATH” in opposition to James 1:12 where those tested and endure have a “crown of life” those who go down this path face death. 1 Cor 11:30; 1 John 5:16. So think about this progression – LUST. SIN. DEATH. It is the age old story of Eve our mother. Gen 3.

(Verse 16)  “Do not err, my beloved brethren.”  What a WARNING! Do not make an error. Don’t try to blame God. James 1:13. He is not the source of this evil temptation. 1 Cor 6:9; 15:33; Gal 6:7.

We are all on this path in this life.  As Christians we will have testings and proving to grow us and to mature us. We need this. It helps us. God knows what we need. But as we go along this path we MUST remember we are SINFUL creatures. Rom 3:23. All sinners. And within our own hearts can come LUSTS, desires, unholy thoughts that come from this place within us and began to grow – begin a process – begin to make progress AWAY from truth and holiness.  2 Tim 3:5  It is a downward leading path. A dark path. A dangerous path and a deadly path.  Next week we have better news. Good news! But in the mean time be careful on this path of life, path of death. Don’t be led away. Don’t take the bait.
